I know I'm a white boy but this Fela stuff is pure magic. The music is just hypnotic. I have a few friends that casually listen to Fela but they all say the same thing, "it's great backround music, but i wouldn't sit down and listen to it closely". Actually, that's the whole point. Most music is just verse chorus verse chorus and so on, maybe with a guitar solo thrown in the mix. Fela's music is different. It has pulse, a flow, one that increases and decreases in intensity as the song develops. I find this more interesting because you can listen to the whole song without getting bored. Have you ever listened to 15 minute pop song with the same level of interest the whole way though? Probably not. Even after listening to a Fela song you still feel like it has lasted only a few minutes. Anyway, I could go on and on but there's no point in trying to explain Fela's music without listening to it yourself.

As for the boxset itself. I was initially disappointed with the quality... Read more

First of all I love Fela Kuti and afrobeat. I own numerous afrobeat compilations and by far this is the best of them all. It includes 6 of fela's best albums. To finally be able to own Sorrow Tears and Blood on vinyl is worth the price of the package in and of itself (to me atleast)
THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST VINYL PURCHASE I HAVE EVER MADE! you can not go wrong with having this amazing box set in your collection.

this box set includes many of fela's popular tracks. missing: original sufferhead, odoo, upside down. i already owned most of his catalogue on cd and a couple on vinyl. this box provided a great way to acquire a quality collection of his music on vinyl. highly recommended for fans of fela.

many have tried to imitate fela's sound -including his son, femi- and yet no one sounds like him. he infuses his soul into his music in a way inimitable. he held such strong conviction and passion for the topics about which he sang. so much so that he died for it. we miss you fela. just like there will never be another jimi hendrix. there never be another fela. immerse yourself in this one-of-a-kind experience.

    only con:
the quality of the graphics on the album cover. it almost appears as though someone took a photo of the original covers and used that to print these covers. or that they enlarged the cd covers to make the album covers.
