Cold Steel Recon Scout Black Kraton Handle with Black Blade

Product Description

In almost every respect, the Recon Scout is simply a 7 1/2 inch Trail Master Bowie. It offers the same steel, heat treatment, blade thickness, blade shape, and handle. Unlike other combat knives, the Recon Scout's broad clip point is highly resistant to bending or breaking. It's ideal for long range cutting and slashing. Additionally, the blade is equipped with a slightly concave false edge that measures approximately 3 1/2" long.

  • Blade: 7 1/2"
  • Overall: 12 1/2"
  • Weight: 15 oz.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cold Steel Recon Scout Rocks!, August 22, 2011

Bought the Cold Steel Recon Scout 7 1/2" blade last fall after a boatload of research on quality survival knives that can do most anything. Paid about $120 including shipping. The Recon Scout lives up to the reputation of solid performace, a blade that keeps it's sharpness and overall toughness. I like the solid sheath which makes it easy to carry on a belt or backpack strap. I added a sheath (to attach my Leatherman multi-purpose) to the Recon Scout sheath. The Recon Scout weight is great for chopping wood as well as splitting wood up to about 4" in diameter. Trust me when I say I was chopping frozen oak in 5 degree weather this winter with minimal extra effort. Always use WD-40 when splitting wood as it helps the knife slide through without binding. Also, always use gloves which absorbs the shock of chopping and may protect your fingers. Lastly, when splitting wood: always have a solid piece of wood under the wood you are splitting so you do not "ground" the knife... Read more

Have you ever picked up and knife and said "this is a nice knife?" That is what I said about the Recon Scout - but its not just a nice knife, its a great knife. My Recon Scout is probably 16, maybe 17 years old and its still one of my favorite knives of all time. Even though I have bought a lot of knives during the past 16 - 17 years, none of them have been able to replace my Recon.

This knife has been used for everything from busting a hole in a wall to run a TV cable, to skinning a whitetail deer. The long blade did get a little awkward as the hide was being cut from the meat. But it did the job with no problems.

The high carbon steel means the blade is easy to sharpen and it holds an edge very well.

When I go on a hiking / backpacking trip, a lot of times the Recon Scout will be strapped to the outside of my pack. It's just one of those things that you want easy access to, and it looks really cool.

The sheath that came with my Recon... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Cold Steel Recon Scout, October 22, 2011

Well ive had this Bowie for a few years now. It has Hacked Brush, Chopped Small logs into kindling,Batonning Great.I dont know exactly how many 2x4s a foot or so long that ive split with it but probly a couple hundred and the steel has never chipped or folded. The knife stays sharp a long time and all I seem to have to do is touch it up with ceramic sticks once in a while. I only wipe the blade with wd-40 after a backpacking expedition, Some times a little rust will show up, but some fine steel wool and a little elbow greese seems to work along with an extra sqwirt od WD-40
The knife is just plain tough and weighs a little, But for me it does the job for what i use it for, Wood processing. One small problem for me has been the sheath its a secure ex but over time the knife dosent SNAPin like it did when i first bought it and it never did snap in STRONG. Of course the knife has been drawn from the sheath many 100s of times. The only Super tight secure ex sheath that actually has a... Read more
